Phigvel Makers represents founder Hideki Tohno’s ode to the heritage innate in modern clothing design. Internalizing the archetypal nature of heritage silhouettes, Tohno’s approach is to edit rather than reproduce or develop anew, seeking tension between appearance and feeling with an emphasis on a material-focused sense of modernity. Familiar designs appear from a distance as faithful reproductions of reference material, but in feeling and wearing each garment the modern touch becomes clear. Replicating a perceived sense of care within historic production methods, Phigvel garments can be considered a form of neo-heritage, melding the past and present into one.
