Rei Kawakubo founded Comme des Garçons in 1969 in Japan, with strong artistic concepts rather than easy fashion. Huge success outside of Japan in the 1980s prompted Kawakubo to start many diffusion lines, among them Comme des Garçons Shirt. She utilizes the SHIRT line in particular to explore a youthful and playful side of CDG. Revisiting familiar forms, Kawakubo employs experimental application of colours, prints, patchwork and shapes to re-invent casual garments.
