"My feelings for Araki are usually mixed. As a cultural figure I just love him to bits but his photography was always on the verge of absurdity compared to other contemporaries like Daido Moriyama whose sinister tone appealed more to me always. Araki’s most interesting bulk of work is not his erotic one but his pics of Tokyo and also the period around his wife’s death from ovarian cancer around the end of the 80’s. This book was made around the time and I think its one of the most diverse in his career. Various street scenes of Tokyo and nudes mixed in good proportions making for a rather dark depiction of the city as the title suggests ( a hint to his wife dying) and to a decaying cityscape. The area of downtown where Araki lived changing rapidly and his wife passing are the two catalysts. ‘’This is a sentimental photo book that shows the death of my wife and the death of the city. ‘’ Once Araki said in an interview that when you decide to move out of the city you start dying. That line always resonates with me."
