carefully observe the movements and dynamics on the streets
there is a rich soundscape of different and possibly unfamiliar spoken words
as well as hints of certain smells, that evoke nostalgic memories
various consistencies and textures shape taste, like you shape the space around yourself
‘shape the space around yourself’ is an experimental film with a live score by antwerp-based project unkruid, paris-based filmmaker cassandre lafon, vancouver based shop neighbour and den haag based artists kim david bots and lyckle de jong.
tthe short film portrays various places in the neighbourhood of unkruid's atelier in the city of antwerp. such as a turkish bakery, a flower shop, an antiquarian bookshop, a chinese restaurant and a 100-year-old café. as well as their owners and the interaction between them and three performers.
the way of portraying happens in a rather open, intuitive and improvised, sometimes performative and poetic way, leaving it to the imagination of reality and fiction.
using a bolex super 16mm camera, the film documents real-life situations, that can never be recreated, as well as the movements and dynamics of the streets, and their magical in-between moments. the film captures the absurdity and beauty of everyday life and touches on themes such as memory, waiting, walking, reflecting, daydreaming, deep longings, not holding back and observing.
over the course of this year, the film was screened six times at various locations with live musical accompaniment, with the premiere taking place in paris in january. this was followed by two further screenings during the opening of klamot in antwerp in september and most recently in october in tokyo at dover street market ginza. the soundtrack is a live recording from january 24th during the premier night at eva meyer gallery in paris.
