The traditional Moroccan Babouche slipper bares the characteristics of a thin sole, pointed toe and, most distinctly, a heel that folds inward for convenient removal. The shoe came into abundance out of a necessity of the Muslim religion—The Holy Prophet regarded shoes as impure and commanded the faithful remove all dirt from their sandals prior to praying. In pragmatic style it became easier to remove shoes, and frequent prayer (and shoe removal) ensured babouche slippers became the preferred footwear of the Muslim faith.
